The current five-day, 40-hour work week has been a thing since the Fair Labor Standards Act was implemented in 1940. But while it was a needed reform at the time, it hardly feels like the best way to go about things in the year 2024. 

The five-day work week, plus commute times, plus shortened lunch breaks, plus mandatory overtime, plus bosses with your personal phone number mean an all too busy work week. And when wage stagnation forces your wife to work too, well now there's no time for anything else. 

In truth, "off" days feel more like catchup days, and maximizing the only opportunity you have to do laundry, buy groceries and take care of projects can be more stressful than work itself.
